Love Never Ends
1 Corinthians 13:8,13 Love never ends. But as for prophecies, they will come to an end; as for tongues, they will cease; as for knowledge, it will come to an end. And now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; and the greatest of these is love. (NRSV)
I think that one of the greatest achievements in life, is to love people through to the end. Whether it be husband and wife, whether it be brother and sister, or friend and friend. Hanging in until the end.
Have you ever been tempted to give up on love? To say nope, that’s it, I’ve had enough … and just walk away?
Amongst the so-called developed nations, the divorce rate has hovered around the 40% mark for a long time, but it’s recently started to decline. Why? Is it because people are getting better at relationships? Is it because they’re firming up in their resolve to love their soulmate through thick and thin? Sadly not – it’s just that fewer people are getting married in the first place.
It’s a tragic sign that we’re happy to live in disposable relationships. Well, done with that one … on to the next. I have a friend who’s around my age who is onto his sixth – 2 marriages, 4 de factos.
And yet we all yearn to be in stable, loving relationships. There’s a reason for that. God made us that way.
That’s why His Word says something incredibly powerful, incredibly important and at times incredibly difficult to live out, about the duration, the longevity of love. Here it is:
1 Corinthians 13:8,13 Love never ends. But as for prophecies, they will come to an end; as for tongues, they will cease; as for knowledge, it will come to an end. And now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; and the greatest of these is love. (NRSV)
Did you get that? Love never ends. It never gives up. That’s why His Word says that of these three – faith, hope and love – the greatest is love.
So, what relationships are you ready to give up on?
That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
