Never Smile at a Crocodile

Psalm 91:14 The Lord says, “If someone trusts me, I will save them. I will protect my followers who call to me for help.”

There are enough challenging and even scary things out there in the big wide world to stop us from living life to the full. And so what many people do is they try to cocoon themselves in safety and comfort. But seriously, that’s no way to live your life. That’s not how you have an impact in this world.

A few years back, my wife and I went on a holiday to an idyllic tropical part of the country. It was warm and sunny and there were palm trees and beaches. It was absolutely fantastic as a place to get away from it all.

Around dusk one evening, Jacqui and I went for a walk along the beach just as the sun was slipping below the horizon. Now we kind of knew that there were crocodiles in this area, but I had this cavalier attitude – “Ah, it’s a tourist beach. There’d be signs if there were crocodiles.”

Nevertheless, we did feel a little nervous walking back to our hotel through the bushland in the dark. The next day we were told by a local that crocodiles regularly frequented that beach, particularly around sunset. I don’t think we’ll be doing that again anytime soon!

Now look, we don’t want to tempt fate and repeat stupid mistakes like that (although we all do dumb things from time to time). But there are actually a lot of hidden crocs on the highways and byways of life, each and every day.

And we can either spend our days being afraid to live life to the full, or we can step out boldly (knowing that we’ll make the odd mistake) and take God at His Word.

Make no mistake. The Lord is in the business of protecting you, even when you don’t realise it.
