Now Here’s a Crazy Idea

Psalm 100:1-5 Earth, sing to the Lord! Be happy as you serve the Lord! Come before him with happy songs! Know that the Lord is God. He made us, and we belong to him. We are his people, the sheep he takes care of. Come through the gates to his Temple giving thanks to him. Enter his courtyards with songs of praise. Honour him and bless his name. The Lord is good! There is no end to his faithful love. We can trust him forever and ever!

The more economically and financially advanced we become, I strongly suspect, the easier it is for us to turn self-delusion into an artform. We’d like to think that we put God first, but then, there are so many good things out there to enjoy.

I think that sometimes we kid ourselves, you and I. We think that we’re living our lives first and foremost for God, but actually good old numero uno – you or in my case, me – is at the centre of our thoughts and desires.

Take the way we pray for instance. Do you start off by worshipping God, or asking Him for stuff?

Sorry to be so blunt, but I suspect that how we kick off our prayer time tells us an awful lot about who or what comes first in our lives.

So here’s a crazy idea. Just imagine praying every day for a week without asking God for anything. After all, Jesus said He already knows what we need even before the words are on our lips. So … I’m serious. What would it look like if you prayed each morning for … I don’t know … fifteen, twenty minutes, without asking God for a single thing – instead, thanking Him, praising Him, waiting quietly on Him to speak?

Psalm 100:1-5 Earth, sing to the Lord! Be happy as you serve the Lord! Come before him with happy songs! Know that the Lord is God. He made us, and we belong to him. We are his people, the sheep he takes care of. Come through the gates to his Temple giving thanks to him. Enter his courtyards with songs of praise. Honour him and bless his name. The Lord is good! There is no end to his faithful love. We can trust him forever and ever!

Now there’s a crazy idea, eh?!

That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
