Seeing Beyond Ourselves
Luke 6:37 Don’t judge others, and God will not judge you. Don’t condemn others, and you will not be condemned. Forgive others, and you will be forgiven.
We think we understand people. But so often we see life only through our own lens – our culture, our experiences, our comfort. And when that’s all we know, we risk missing the realities of others who live very different lives to our own.
There’s a startling map out there that shows the world split into two halves – each containing four billion people. One half is spread across most of the earth’s surface. The other half is concentrated in just a small corner of Asia … same number of people, completely different spaces.
And to be honest, it’s pictorially jarring. We’re so accustomed to maps that centre on our own perspective, but this one exposes how little we grasp of the world as others experience it. And isn’t that also true in life?
We assume that our view is the whole picture when, in reality, others carry stories we barely comprehend. Here, Jesus cuts through our blindness:

Behind those words is an invitation – to lay aside pride and prejudice, to truly see people. That’s the challenge. Who in your life have you been misunderstanding because you’ve only ever looked from your own angle?
What pain, what struggle, what richness of experience might you discover if you paused to see things through their eyes?
Because when we see differently, we learn to love as Jesus did.
