Take the Plunge

Ephesians 3:18,19 I pray that you and all God’s holy people will have the power to understand the greatness of Christ’s love—how wide, how long, how high, and how deep that love is. Christ’s love is greater than anyone can ever know, but I pray that you will be able to know that love. Then you can be filled with everything God has for you.

Relationships are funny things. The more you dive in, the riskier and yet at the same time the more fulfilling they are. So what we often do is keep people at arm’s length. It’s safer that way. You can make a quick escape. But those relationships … well, they’re so shallow and unfulfilling.

I was staying with some friends recently who had this beautiful, inground heated swimming pool with a stunning view over a gorgeous valley. Seriously, you couldn’t have imagined anything more idyllic.

Anyhow, it was a beautiful hot sunny day – just perfect for a swim. So I stepped into the pool but being the wimp that I am, it took me almost five minutes to take the plunge. You know what it’s like; it feels so cold as you lower your body into the water. But within just a few minutes of getting in, it felt so warm. It was a stunning experience in a beautiful place, and yet I almost gave up because getting in is always the problem.

I wonder whether it isn’t the same for some people with Jesus.  From the outside it all looks fantastic. You just know that when you get fully immersed in that relationship, it’s going to be unbelievable.

But somehow … somehow we just tarry outside, or maybe we make it ankle deep into the relationship and then we wonder, “Why doesn’t this whole ‘Jesus thing’ meet up to my expectations?”

So, like the Apostle Paul,

Ephesians 3:18,19 I pray that you and all God’s holy people will have the power to understand the greatness of Christ’s love—how wide, how long, how high, and how deep that love is. Christ’s love is greater than anyone can ever know, but I pray that you will be able to know that love. Then you can be filled with everything God has for you.

Take the plunge.

That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
