That Sinking Feeling

Matthew 14:29-31 Then Peter left the boat and walked on the water to Jesus. But while Peter was walking on the water, he saw the wind and the waves. He was afraid and began sinking into the water. He shouted, “Lord, save me!” Then Jesus caught Peter with his hand. He said, “Your faith is small. Why did you doubt?”

One of the biggest mistake that we can ever make in following Jesus, is somehow imagining that everything depends on us. That if I don’t get this little bit or that little bit right, it’s all going to fall in a heap. We completely forget that Jesus is in that place.

You remember that story, right? The disciples are out there on that stormy sea in a fishing boat, wondering whether they’re going to make it through. It’s been a long, fearful night.

But just before dawn Jesus comes out, walking on the water. And Peter – I still can’t believe he does this – Peter gets out of the boat and walks towards Jesus in the middle of the storm! As things turn out, that’s probably not such a bad choice. After all, where’s the safest place – back in a boat that’s about to sink, or out on the stormy sea with Jesus?

Matthew 14:29-31 Then Peter left the boat and walked on the water to Jesus. But while Peter was walking on the water, he saw the wind and the waves. He was afraid and began sinking into the water. He shouted, “Lord, save me!” Then Jesus caught Peter with his hand. He said, “Your faith is small. Why did you doubt?”

So, no sooner does he step out of the boat than he realises what he’s done. He takes his eyes off Jesus and all he can see is that raging storm. And whoompa, into the ocean he goes!

But immediately, Jesus grabs him and pulls him out. And that’s the whole point, isn’t it? It’s just what Jesus does.

You and I are never going to walk the faith walk perfectly. We will fail. We will take our eyes of Jesus. But in that instant, Jesus is there. In that instant, He’ll pull you up.

So, step out of the boat anyway.

That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
