The Certainty of Salvation

John 5:24 I assure you, anyone who hears what I say and believes in the one who sent me has eternal life. They will not be judged guilty. They have already left death and have entered into life.

A good many people have the key criterion – the only criterion –  for eternal life confused. Some say, I’m not such a bad person. I should be fine. While others wonder, Will I end up being good enough?

Well, are you good enough? I’m not, and what’s more I never will be. Look, I’m not a bad person. I’ve lived a pretty decent life thus far and the same’s probably true of you. But none of us have lived a life good enough for God. We’ve all sinned and fallen short of His glory, His standard of absolute perfection.

And that’s why Jesus came for you and for me; to die on that Cross to pay the price of our sin that God’s justice demands; to rise again to give us the gift of a new life here on earth and eternal life in His Presence forever.

How do we lay hold of all that? By working harder? By being a good person? Here it is, in Jesus’ own words:

John 5:24 I assure you, anyone who hears what I say and believes in the one who sent me has eternal life. They will not be judged guilty. They have already left death and have entered into life.

We lay hold of life eternal simply by believing in Jesus; by faith in the price He paid on that Cross; by faith in the fact that our guilt and the judgement we deserve fell upon Him so we could have life eternal.

I assure you, anyone who hears what I say and believes in the one who sent me has eternal life … They have already left death and have entered into life.

By faith. That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
