The Doubting Dutchman

Jude 1:22,23 Help those who have doubts. Rescue those who are living in danger of hell’s fire.

Doubt is something that strikes each one of us from time to time. Self-doubt, sure, but also doubt in God. Doubt that He will do what He says He’ll do. Doubt that we will, one day, spend eternity with Him.

Years ago, here at Christianityworks, we received a donation of $500 from someone we’d never heard of. So I found the man in the telephone directory (that’s how long ago it was!) and called to thank him.

But his voice sounded feeble. It turned out that he was in his final days, suffering with terminal cancer. He told me he wasn’t even sure if he was saved anymore. So the next day I flew interstate to visit him, the trip costing more than he’d donated, something we really couldn’t afford at the time. On top of which, I’m not particularly pastorally gifted, so I was nervous knocking on his door.

But when I arrived, this elderly man told me his story in his thick Dutch accent. He’d believed in Jesus all his life, but now in his final days, he had doubts. Significant doubts. Was there really a God? And if so, was he really saved through Jesus, or hadn’t he lived a good enough life? Would he be condemned to the fires of hell?

Jude 1:22,23 Help those who have doubts. Rescue those who are living in danger of hell’s fire.

This saint was afraid of losing his salvation but with just a few words, through me, God restored his faith. In that moment, the joy brought tears to his eyes and mine. We hugged and agreed to meet again in heaven. This little episode had turned out to be one of the greatest privileges of my life.

Help those who have doubts. Rescue those who are living in danger of hell’s fire.

That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
