The Fourth of July

1 Corinthians 12:26,27 If one part of the body suffers, then all the other parts suffer with it. Or if one part is honoured, then all the other parts share its honour. All of you together are the body of Christ. Each one of you is a part of that body.

Each country around the world has its special days that it sets apart to celebrate something of its past. And today, for one great nation, is such a day. But what does it all mean?

It pretty much doesn’t matter where you live on planet earth, I think that everybody knows the significance of the fourth of July in the US of A. It’s Independence Day. It’s the day that the Americans celebrate throwing off the shackles of British colonial rule and becoming an independent nation in their own right.

Without Independence Day, America would not have become the great nation that it is today. Independence is a good thing. Freedom is a good thing. As far as it goes.

But there’s an ideal, a quality, an attribute that stands head and shoulders above the idea of independence. It’s … interdependence.

1 Corinthians 12:26,27 If one part of the body suffers, then all the other parts suffer with it. Or if one part is honoured, then all the other parts share its honour. All of you together are the body of Christ. Each one of you is a part of that body.

Whether it’s in the relationship between one country or another, or, in a relationship between one individual and another, interdependence is so powerful.

Because it’s founded on a gentle humility, as well as powerful freedom. In fact, it brings those two together in the most wonderful combination. Someone who lives as an interdependent individual, knows that he or she doesn’t have all the answers. They don’t have all the skills or the abilities or the strength.

Interdependent people know that we need each other, to be whole.

Independence. That’s great. Interdependence. That’s much, much better.

So, here’s to it. Happy interdependence day!

That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
