It’s Time to Get Off the Merry-Go-Round

John 8:36 So if the Son makes you free, you are really free.

Freedom, for many, is an all too illusive concept. We know we should be free, but somehow, it doesn’t quite feel as though we are. Ever had that sense? What’s going on?

When our lives aren’t going quite the way they should be, we have two options: to just keep on doing the same thing over and over again, or to decide at some point, to get off that wretched merry-go-round and try something different. But how do you do that?

Intuitively we know that we’re meant to be free.  We’re not meant to be slaves to some addiction, or bad behaviour that we know, absolutely, is ruining our lives.

But freedom is an all-too-rare commodity. I meet a lot of people, and I can tell when someone has that gleam of freedom on their face; that innate, God-given sense of wellbeing and peace and joy in their hearts. But honestly, I don’t see that all too often.

So, how do you get free? How do you get off this merry-go-round that never seems to stop? You’ve tried but nothing’s ever worked. When Jesus was talking to some folk who were enslaved to their sin, but they just couldn’t see it for themselves, He said to them:

John 8:36 So if the Son makes you free, you are really free.

Working harder at becoming a better person, at overcoming that one thing in your life that keeps getting the better of you … it just doesn’t work. You’re bound to keep repeating the mistake. You’re doomed to staying on that merry-go-round, round and round, ending up back in the same place each time.

There’s only one thing that does work – a deep, intimate, powerful, life-changing relationship with Jesus. That’s it.

That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
