The Power to God

Ephesians 6:10 To end my letter I tell you, be strong in the Lord and in his great power. Put on the whole armour of God, so that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.

Don’t you wish you were able to deal with the sin in your life, your foibles and bad habits, much more quickly than God seems to be dealing with them? I mean come on God, let’s get on with this!

When I first became a Christian I imagined that God would take a few months at most to sort me out and get rid of the sin in my life.

But after a while, I started to realise that dealing with the layers of muck that had accumulated in me over many years, wasn’t going to be a quick process.

It’s a bit like peeling layers of an onion and the deeper He goes, the more it hurts, which is why He takes His time.

Every now and then, I think to myself, “Right, we need to accelerate this … work harder, go faster, come on Berni, move it!” So I pedal furiously for a while, before falling exhausted on the floor.

Finally I’ve realised that I can’t do this in my own strength. This new life unfolds in God’s good time and through God’s power alone.

Ephesians 6:10 To end my letter I tell you, be strong in the Lord and in his great power. Put on the whole armour of God, so that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.

Yes, be committed. Yes, cooperate with God. Yes, work hard at making the changes that He leads you into. But remember this: the devil is only defeated by the power of God. Temptation is only overcome by the power of God.

Yes be committed and by all means cooperate with God. Be a man or woman of God’s Word. Spend time in prayer. But rely on God’s power more and more.

That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
