The Strength to Keep Honouring God
1 Samuel 12:24 But you must honour the LORD. You must serve him sincerely with all your heart. Remember the wonderful things he has done for you.
There are times when doing the right thing seems impossible: When you’ve prayed, obeyed, and nothing seems to change. When compromise looks easier, silence feels safer, quitting sounds tempting. Your heart whispers, “Why keep going?”
In 1555, Hugh Latimer, once Bishop of Worcester in England, was imprisoned for preaching the gospel during England’s persecution of Protestants. Standing beside fellow believer Nicholas Ridley at the stake, he could have recanted and lived.
Instead, he cried out, “Be of good comfort, Master Ridley, and play the man; we shall this day light such a candle, by God’s grace, in England, as I trust shall never be put out.” Their steadfastness inspired a renewed wave of courage among English believers who refused to recant their faith. Their resolve fanned faith that endures to this day.

The Old Testament prophet, Samuel, spoke those words to Israel as they turned from God to trust a human king. They feared enemies more than the Lord Himself. But Samuel reminded them: the strength to keep obeying comes not from fear or willpower, but from remembering God’s faithfulness.
That’s the heart of it – consider what great things He has done for you. When obedience feels too heavy, look back. Remember His mercy, His patience, His cross. Gratitude rekindles courage.
So today, if honouring God feels impossible, if every bone in your body is screaming at you to give up, stop striving and start remembering. Because the same God who’s carried you this far … will carry you the rest of the way.
