The Uncertainty of Certainty

Luke 21:34-36 Be careful not to spend your time having parties and getting drunk or worrying about this life. If you do that, you won’t be able to think straight, and the end might come when you are not ready. It will come as a surprise to everyone on earth. So be ready all the time. Pray that you will be able to get through all these things that will happen and stand safe before the Son of Man.

If you knew that one day this year, would be your last day on this earth, if you knew that with absolute certainty, how would it change the way you live between now and that day?

So let me ask you – what does this new year have in store for you, hmm? The truth is, you have no idea. Nor do I. Sure, we have plans for the good things we want to see happen for us this year, but will they happen? God only knows.

You know how life is. We think that so many things are so certain. In fact, I’m so certain that I’ll still be around at the end of this year that I have bookings in my diary for this and that, stretching well into next year and beyond. But then … this year could be the year that the Lord calls me home.

This year, the sun may come up one day and I won’t be around for it to shine on me – and the same is true of you. If the truth be known, the things in this life that we consider to be so certain are about as fleeting as a morning mist. So, as Jesus put it …

Be ready for Jesus – stand firm in your faith because the end could come any time.

That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
