One of the great tensions of following God’s call on our lives is how much faith to exercise in following the crazy ideas that come to mind, versus how much rational thought to apply in getting things done.
I truly hope that you’re facing that dilemma on a regular basis, because what that tells me is that you’re out on the ragged edge of faith – that fine line where, unless God shows up, everything’s going to come crashing down. What a great place to be … that place where we have to depend on God.
Now, as crazy ideas go, Noah’s building of the ark miles from any sea or ocean is right up there. It took him many decades and a huge amount of labour and money to accomplish while everyone else stood by, ridiculing crazy old Noah. But he did it …

Yep, Noah built the ark by faith but he had to plan it, he had to provision it, he had to measure it. There was marine engineering involved. There was carpentry involved. In short, without planning and rational thinking, the “in faith” bit would never have happened.
The point is that rational thinking plays a vital part in any faith walk. It’s not one or the other. It’s both. Absolutely follow with all your heart God’s apparently crazy call on your life. Yes, walk in faith. But use your head.
