What is God Thinking?

Isaiah 55:8-9 "My thoughts are not like yours. Your ways are not like mine. Just as the heavens are higher than the earth, so my ways are higher than your ways, and my thoughts are higher than your thoughts." This is what the LORD himself said.

In any relationship, often people do the most unexpected things. It’s true in our human relationships and it’s particularly true in our relationship with God.

Sometimes, God seems to do the craziest things. It’s true isn’t it? Some days, things just don’t make sense. Why? Why did God let that happen? What was He thinking? It’s confusing. It’s exasperating.

And from our rather poor, rather clouded, rather foggy and limited vantage point, we say to ourselves, “Well, now, if I were God – I’d have done things differently. I’d have done this or that or …” Have you ever thought that to yourself?

We think that we see things all so clearly, and yet all too often, our perspective is all wrong. Most of the time, we see things through the eyes of our own needs; our own desires; our own comforts, or through a distorted sense of human justice.

But God has quite a different perspective. This is how He puts it:

Isaiah 55:8-9 “My thoughts are not like yours. Your ways are not like mine. Just as the heavens are higher than the earth, so my ways are higher than your ways, and my thoughts are higher than your thoughts.” This is what the LORD himself said.

You see, God stands back and He sees the whole picture; the whole game; the whole chessboard. You and I, we don’t know which bits are connected to which other bits. We can’t begin to understand how this random bit of suffering over here is going to bring some good over there.

There’s no way we can understand all that God has planned for the big picture. So the next time you’re tempted to play God, remember, you can only see but a miniscule part of the picture.

That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
