What’s God Like?

Hebrews 1:3 He is the reflection of God’s glory and the exact imprint of God’s very being, and he sustains all things by his powerful word. When he had made purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high. (NRSV)

Fundamental to having a rich, satisfying relationship with someone is getting to know them. Maybe that’s why so many people don’t ever manage to have a rich, satisfying relationship with God – because they never actually get to know Him.

Have you ever thought to yourself, “I wonder what God’s like? I mean, what He’s really like?”

It’s pretty common actually, because we can’t see Him physically, the way we can see the other people in our lives. So what we tend to do is to rely on images of what we think He’s like. And you know what happens then, right?! We all too easily remake Him into an image that’s acceptable to us – one that we’re comfortable with.

Look … any person is complex. Ask any man who’s married and he’ll tell you how complex his wife really is. Hey, I’ve been married to my beautiful wife Jacqui for decades now, and I know absolutely that I’ll be figuring her out for the rest of my life.

Well, God’s complex too, which is why the half-baked images of Him that we carry round in our heads simply don’t cut it. So how do you go about figuring Him out, when you can’t see Him?

Hebrews 1:3
He is the reflection of God’s glory and the exact imprint of God’s very being, and he sustains all things by his powerful word. When he had made purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high. (NRSV)

How? You look at Jesus who, as it turns out, is the exact imprint of God’s very being. (The wording there alludes to a die used to stamp the image of Caesar onto a coin).

So you want to know what God’s really like? Look at Jesus. Look directly at Him.

That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
