Who Are You Going to Tell?

Mark 5:18,19 As he was getting into the boat, the man who had been possessed by demons begged him that he might be with him. But Jesus did not allow the man to go. He said, “Go home to your family and friends. Tell them about all that the Lord did for you. Tell them how the Lord was good to you.”

When Jesus does mighty, powerful things in our lives, our first understandable reaction is to praise Him and thank Him. But strangely, there’s something else that He would have us do as well.

Jesus once came across a man whose life was an absolute mess.

Mark 5:1-5They came to the other side of the sea, to the country of the Gerasenes. And when he had stepped out of the boat, immediately a man out of the tombs with an unclean spirit met him. He lived among the tombs; and no one could restrain him anymore, even with a chain; for he had often been restrained with shackles and chains, but the chains he wrenched apart, and the shackles he broke in pieces; and no one had the strength to subdue him. (NRSV)

So Jesus cast out the demons, sending them into a herd of pigs that promptly ran and jumped off a cliff. The locals were horrified, so they asked Jesus to leave. But that man was set free.

Mark 5:18,19 As Jesus was getting into the boat, the man who had been possessed by demons begged him that he might be with him. But Jesus did not allow the man to go. He said, “Go home to your family and friends. Tell them about all that the Lord did for you. Tell them how the Lord was good to you.”

Instead of recruiting an enthusiastic new disciple that day, Jesus sent him back to the very people who’d rejected HIM that day with a mission to tell them of God’s grace.

Whom is Jesus calling you today to tell of the mighty things that He’s done in your life? Go.

Tell them about all that the Lord did for you. Tell them how the Lord was good to you.

That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.

Thanks for contacting us. You ask a hard question as to why Christ sent the demons into the pigs, as the Bible offers no explanation of this remarkable event. Nevertheless, the story has conjured up at least three ideas:

• In their question of Jesus, “What have you to do with us, O Son of God? Have you come to torment us before the time?”, the demons plead for the Lord to be merciful towards them. Jesus apparently accepted the argument that the time for their final consignment to hell had not yet arrived. Hence their translation into the swine rather than their destruction.

• The demons were maybe thinking that, if 2,000 pigs drowned in the lake, Jesus would get the blame for this sizable financial loss to the owners and his ministry would be discredited. As it turns out, he was asked to leave the district by townsfolk who were clearly very anxious about His power. That this large number of pigs were involved suggests that the demoniacs had been harbouring a great number of demons.

• A lesson the Gadarenes needed to learn was that human life, however impaired, is of far greater value than pigs.

There is another argument which has been put forward, but which I think is very speculative. If the owners of the pigs were Jewish, it would have been punishment for their rearing unclean animals, according to Jewish law. However, there is no indication that the owners were Jewish which seems unlikely as the event occurred in the country of the Gadarenes who were Gentiles.

Why did Jesus sent the cast demons into the herb of pigs instead of just delivering him like what he did to others?
