He Never, Ever Gives Up

Lamentations 3:22,23 The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases, his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. (NRSV)

Life doesn’t always go the way we’d planned. If only that wasn’t the case, eh? But it is. And sometimes the reason for that is that we’ve wandered off on our own, leaving God behind. Or at least, when we come to our senses, that’s what we imagine.

A while back, I received an e-mail out of the blue from an old school friend. In fact, he was the one who’d led me to Christ over forty years ago, back there in the schoolyard.

In the e-mail he told me how he’d grown up only to stray far from God just, in fact, as I had. That’s what so often happens when our youthful idealism is lost to the cares and responsibilities of adult life.

But then he went on to write that he’d gone through a major crisis in his life and discovered, to his surprise, that Jesus was waiting there for him, right in the middle of it all. Again, just as it had happened to me.

As I thought about the strange parallels between my old school friend’s life and mine, this beautiful verse came to heart.

Lamentations 3:22,23 The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases, his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. (NRSV)

It’s true … sometimes life does get incredibly dark and bleak. And if that happens at a time when we’ve wandered away from God, when we’ve left Him behind to chase after the things of this world … the whole situation is ten times worse.

We realise that we’re in that dark place without God – at least, that’s what we think. But if you ever find yourself in that place, remember this:

The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases, his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is his faithfulness.

He never, ever gives up.

That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
