Will Heaven Happen?

1 Peter 1:3-5 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! By his great mercy he has given us a new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, and into an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you, who are being protected by the power of God through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. (NRSV)

The troubles of this world have a funny way of eating away at our hope for the future. As they increase, so our hope seems to drain out of us. Sadly, at the very time when we need hope, it seems to go missing in action.

Have you ever found yourself wondering, “Will heaven actually ever happen for me?” It’s not an unreasonable question. And there’s a very simple answer. Here it is:

1 Peter 1:3-5 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! By his great mercy he has given us a new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, and into an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you, who are being protected by the power of God through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. (NRSV)

I love that – a new birth into a living hope … a fresh, new start when you believe in Jesus. That’s what it means to be “born again”. The slate’s wiped clean and just as a child slips from the womb into a whole new world, so we, when we’re born again in Christ, enter into a living hope. Because, you see, Christ was raised from the dead. That’s why our hope in Him is alive, not dead.

And as Peter writes here to these Christians who were being so terribly, so horribly, tortured and persecuted, for whom that hope doubtless seemed to be slipping away …

into an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you, who are being protected by the power of God through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.

No matter what this world throws at you, no matter how bad it gets, nobody can ever take away your inheritance in Christ.

That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
