Another Year Begins

Proverbs 27:1 Never brag about what you will do in the future; you have no idea what tomorrow will bring.

I wonder what sort of a year this year is going to be for you and for me? What does the future hold? Will it be a great year, or a good year, at least? What do you have planned? What are you looking forward to?

Well, a happy New Year to ya! At least, I hope that it’s going to be a happy one … but nothing’s for certain. I don’t mean to put a dampener on your celebrations, but that’s the truth.

Just like you, I have plans, hopes and dreams for this coming year. In fact, my diary’s already pretty full with ministry trips here, there and everywhere … not to mention a holiday with my wife that I am really looking forward to.

I’m guessing you have some plans for the year ahead as well. And that’s a good thing. It’s great to have things to look forward to.

But I want to come back to that truth that nothing is for certain. And it’s not just me saying that to you.

Proverbs 27:1 Never brag about what you will do in the future; you have no idea what tomorrow will bring.

Is it wrong to have plans for the year ahead? Not at all. What is wrong though is when we put our faith in them; when we live our lives as though they’re absolutely going to happen. When we, in a sense, brag about them. My sister passed away recently and as I was packing up her things, shipping her clothes off to a charity, disposing of her few possessions, that truth was powerfully driven home to me.

So … live each day to the full. Give glory to God. Love those around you and serve them to the best of your ability because … you have no idea what tomorrow will bring.

That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
