No Foundations

Matthew 7:26,27 Whoever hears these teachings of mine and does not obey them is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. It rained hard, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house. And it fell with a loud crash.

Obedience is a very unpopular concept these days. It sounds so, well, let’s be honest, old-fashioned. And yet obedience builds strong foundations. The sort of foundations we all need in our lives.

Imagine trying to build a house without putting down solid foundations? Sure! Perhaps you can build a cubbyhouse or a shed in the backyard that way. But the moment you want a serious structure, something solid, something that’ll stand through the storm, the moment you want one of those, you need serious foundations.

The problem is that foundations are expensive, and let’s face it, they’re pretty boring. And so, in life, we just want to race ahead and build our house, without paying too much attention to our foundations.

You see, people who claim to be Christians, and yet when they’re under pressure, all of a sudden, they start lashing out, and behaving badly. You know what that tells me? They’re missing some of God’s foundations in their lives.

This is how Jesus put it:

Matthew 7:26,27 Whoever hears these teachings of mine and does not obey them is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. It rained hard, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house. And it fell with a loud crash.

When the storms of life hit, what we need, are solid foundations. Where do you get those? In the teachings, the powerful life wisdom of Jesus – by spending time quietly alone with Jesus every day.

And in those quiet times, with the door closed and the Book open, Jesus quietly but surely, builds the foundations we need. So that when you go and live them out, when you obey his teachings, all of a sudden, you discover a strength, a “groundedness”, that you never knew you had.

That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
