Shaken But Not Stirred

John 14:27 I leave you peace. It is my own peace I give you. I give you peace in a different way than the world does. So don’t be troubled. Don’t be afraid.

Have you ever noticed how some people walk through chaos with calm you can’t explain? It’s not that life spares them. They’ve just found a peace that doesn’t depend on what’s happening around them. Amazing!

In 1944, Dutch watchmaker and Christian, Casper ten Boom, was betrayed as a member of the Dutch underground, and then arrested by the Nazis for hiding Jews in his home. At 84 years old he was taken to prison, where conditions were harsh and uncertain. Yet even there, he remained calm, quietly trusting God.

When offered release due to his age, he refused on moral grounds, making it clear that he would open his door to anyone in need tomorrow. Days later, he died in custody – his peace intact.

Just hours before His own arrest and crucifixion, Jesus told His disciples:

John 14:27 I leave you peace. It is my own peace I give you. I give you peace in a different way than the world does. So don’t be troubled. Don’t be afraid.

That promise wasn’t merely poetic. It was practical. Given all that lay ahead of them, they were going to need His peace … big time!

And the same Jesus who faced the storm of the cross now offers His Spirit to live within you – steadying your heart when everything else shakes.

So when the waves rise and anxiety shouts loud, pause and breathe His name. Because the presence of Jesus doesn’t always change your circumstances. But it will always change you. You may well be shaken, but not stirred. Don’t be troubled. Don’t be afraid. Jesus.

That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
