Stop Swinging a Blunt Axe

Luke 5:16 Jesus often went away to other places to be alone so that he could pray.

Have you ever noticed how prone we each are to rush into things half-baked, under-prepared? We somehow think that effort alone will carry the day. But then, worn out, frustrated, we wonder why everything feels blunt and ineffective.

Abraham Lincoln once said this: “Give me six hours to chop down a tree and I’ll spend the first four sharpening the axe.” At first glance, that sounds crazy, right? But he knew the secret: preparation multiplies impact. The sharp axe does in minutes what the blunt axe struggles to do in hours.

The same is true in the life of faith. At first glance, Jesus seems to drift from one encounter to another – teaching here, healing there, moving on to the next village. But look closer, and you’ll see His rhythm: slipping away to pray, listening to His Father, preparing in solitude.

Luke 5:16 Jesus often went away to other places to be alone so that he could pray.

That was His sharpening. The power in His public ministry was forged in private prayer. The clarity in His teaching flowed from obedience to His Father’s voice. The courage to go to the Cross was prepared in Gethsemane.

And here’s the challenge for you and me: are we trying to swing a blunt axe through life; rushing into decisions, relationships, challenges – without prayer, without Scripture, without seeking God’s will?

Because the wisdom of preparation hasn’t changed. If you want to live a life of impact, sharpen your axe the way Jesus did. In prayer. In listening. In obedience. Don’t just rush in. Prepare. That’s where the power is.

That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
