Will You Decide to Rest?

Matthew 11:28-30 Come to me, all who labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” (ESV)

It’s a real paradox, a conundrum, that even if you’re managing to get plenty of rest – enough sleep, a break from your labours – you can still end up feeling anything but well rested. There’s a reason for that.

Physical rest is only one part of the equation. In order to feel truly rested, your soul needs to be at rest; your heart needs to be at peace.

Things will come against you. There will be difficult relationships. There will stresses and strains about this and that. The very morning I was up preparing today’s devotion, I knew that what lay ahead for me on that day was dealing with a thorny issue in our ministry. That’s life. It happens to all of us.

And it’s into that reality, speaking to people just like us, that Jesus has this to say:

Matthew 11:28-30 Come to me, all who labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” (ESV)

Jesus is issuing us an invitation as we labour away at life, carrying heavy burdens. He’s calling us, inviting us today in the midst of life’s struggles, to come to Him. Why? Because He’s the One, the only One, who can give us rest for our souls. And the reason that so many never experience true rest is that they don’t take His invitation seriously. Will you? Will you choose rest?

Come to me, all who labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.

That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
