Your Crown Awaits

2 Timothy 4:7-8 I have fought the good fight. I have finished the race. I have served the Lord faithfully. Now, a prize is waiting for me–the crown that will show I am right with God. The Lord, the judge who judges rightly, will give it to me on that Day. Yes, he will give it to me and to everyone else who is eagerly looking forward to his coming.

You can start with passion, talent, and fire – but what matters most is how you finish, because in the race of faith, plenty begin well … few cross the line still faithful.

In the early 1900s, Scottish Olympic sprinter Eric Liddell stunned the world by refusing to run his best event – the 100 metres – because it was scheduled on a Sunday, the day he reserved for worship. The press mocked him. Politicians called him unpatriotic. But Eric stood firm.

Instead, he ran the 400 metres – a race he wasn’t favoured to win. Just before the start, someone slipped him a note that read: “Those who honour Me I will honour.” He won gold.

Yet Liddell’s greater victory came later. At the height of his fame, he left athletics to serve as a missionary in China. When war came, he was imprisoned in a Japanese camp where he spent his final years teaching children, sharing food, and radiating the peace of Christ. He died there – exhausted, but faithful.

The apostle Paul, facing death, wrote:

2 Timothy 4:7-8 I have fought the good fight. I have finished the race. I have served the Lord faithfully. Now, a prize is waiting for me–the crown that will show I am right with God. The Lord, the judge who judges rightly, will give it to me on that Day. Yes, he will give it to me and to everyone else who is eagerly looking forward to his coming.

That’s what finishing well looks like. So when weariness whispers, “Slow down, stop trying,” remember – the prize isn’t given to the fastest, but to the faithful.

Keep running your race. Because every step toward Jesus is a step toward the crown that never fades.

That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
