A Quiet Faith in a Loud World

1 Thessalonians 4:11-12 Do all you can to live a peaceful life. Mind your own business, and earn your own living, as we told you before. If you do these things, then those who are not believers will respect the way you live. And you will not have to depend on others for what you need.

Switch on your smartphone and the noise hits you instantly – wars, scandals, outrage, the latest viral debate. Every scroll tugs your emotions one way or t’other. It’s like living in a constant storm, and the louder it becomes, the harder it is to hear your own thoughts, let alone God’s voice.

A few years ago, a young journalist decided to quit social media for twelve months. Her friends quietly predicted that she’d vanish into irrelevance. Instead, she found something she’d been missing for quite a while – peace. She rediscovered face-to-face connection, focused work, and a sense of purpose that commercialised algorithms simply cannot manufacture.

That’s exactly the kind of life the Apostle Paul urged believers in the bustling city of Thessalonica to pursue:

1 Thessalonians 4:11-12 Do all you can to live a peaceful life. Mind your own business, and earn your own living, as we told you before. If you do these things, then those who are not believers will respect the way you live. And you will not have to depend on others for what you need.

The early Christians lived in a world of unrest, politics, and public shouting – not unlike ours. But Paul’s advice was radical: don’t add to the noise. Build a steady, faithful life that speaks louder than any post or protest.

So today, maybe it’s time to dial back the feed and listen for the still, small voice of God. Because in a world addicted to noise, the quiet soul is the one who lives the most blessed of lives and, paradoxically, the one who stands out most.

That’s God’s Word. Fresh … for you … today.
